Freeman plays God with a quality of warm detachment that is just about right, I think. You get the feeling that even while he's giving Bruce the free ride, he has a hand on the wheel, like a drivers' training instructor. Aniston, as a sweet kindergarten teacher and fiancee, shows again (after "The Good Girl") that she really will have a movie career, despite the small-minded cavils of those who think she should have stayed on television. She can play comedy, which is not easy, and she can keep up with Carrey while not simply mirroring his zaniness; that's one of those gifts like being able to sing one song while typing the words to another.
In the May 2003 issue of CCM Magazine, the magazine interviewed Bruce Almighty directorTom Shadyac asking about the movie and the message behind it. In it, it was revealed that Shadyac (who alsodirected 1997's Liar Liar, the Ace Ventura films, and Patch Adams) was in facta Christian himself. Through his question and answer session, it was determined that Bruce Almightyborders on being a modern-day parable of sorts. The story takes the carnal and self-centered Bruce Nolan,who feels alienated by God, and endows him with godly abilities to see if he could do any better. In turn, themessage relates the fact that humans cannot do God's job and in fact will only screw it up. Bruce used his newfoundabilities for his own gain, for his own benefit and own selfish desires and each had their consequences. Shadyac used humor as the first and foremost element to convey this message, but the story does a 180 andturns more sentimental and emotional before its close. By the way, many critics found this to be a problem,but I found a certain charm from its ability to be emotional and serious at times. In fact, that's what helpedredeem the often vulgar but often hysterical Liar Liar. The messages are huge without beating your mindto death. But Bruce Almighty tastefully drives home the message of how important it is to not be sofocused on ourselves and our own wills but to live out our lives more others-centered and sensitive toGod's direction. It was a b-e-a-utiful (couldn't resist) thing to watch Bruce's transformation to surrenderhimself to God and even offer up some non-generic prayers before the film's close.
