Five-Minute Friday {YES}: The Benefits of Gratitude and Appreciation

Rifkin discovered the deceptively simple concept of the five-minute favor by watching and benefiting from masters of the art such as Rajeev Motwani, Brett Bullington, Omar Ahmad, Craig Johnson, Jeff Barr, and Kevin Compton. When he was a new entrepreneur fresh out of Caltech, many people helped him without expecting a quid pro quo.

But many five-minute favors fall more into the realm of the everyday transactions of life -- hiring and starting careers, learning new skills, maintaining relationships -- albeit with a Silicon Valley twist. Ahmad, for example, gathered up all the holiday strays for his famous Muslim Christmas, which mostly entailed eating Chinese food with Jews, Hindus, and atheists, watching Hollywood movies, and participating in a discourse on Islamic principles.

Five-Minute Friday {YES}

There is not enough time in life to follow through on every five-minute favor opportunity that comes our way, but we have both found that doing one five-minute favor every day for someone has instilled in us a habit that benefits more than just the recipient. When enough people do this, those people become a tight-knit community.

2019-06-16Collaborators Scanlon and Vernick (Dear Substitute, 2018, etc.) team up once again to explore the relativity of time.Five minutes is just 300 seconds, but it can feel like an eternity when waiting in line or sitting in traffic. Five minutes is never enough time to prepare for something scary and definitely insufficient for roller-coaster rides and bedtime stories. From play time to chore time, children and adults alike will sympathize with the young protagonist as the child vacillates between interminably long and painfully brief five-minute stretches in daily life. The sparse and simple text repeats the "five minutes" refrain ad infinitum but invites readers to delve into Tallec's energetic and expressive pencil and acrylic illustrations, which communicate the wide-eyed anxiety, frustration, and contentment as the clock ticks along. The child writhes with discomfort in line for the bathroom and jumps up and down with impatience at suppertime, both circumstances children will instantly recognize. Careful pacing helps to stretch out five-minute eternities and provide funny juxtapositions, as in two contrasting scenes at the dentist's office. The book also opens itself to exploration of concepts of emotional intelligence, patience, and the passage of time. The child appears biracial, with a white-presenting dad and brown-skinned mom.An accessible story that entices readers to slow down and enjoy a moment (maybe five?) in its company. Speck: By the time I first started working at DPZ, which was the summer of '87, you guys had incorporated the five-minute-walk into your planning. So by the time of my first encounters with you all, it had been established, and you were aware of the 1929 (Perry) diagram.

Speck: One of the helpful oversimplifications that I say in my presentations is that the five-minute walk was developed historically. You're getting it from Jericho on, and it was only undermined by the advent of suburbia where we introduced automobile-based zoning. But in fact, if you look at the towns in the early 20th century, that the new urbanists are always pointing at for its successes, such as the Coral Gables, and the Shaker Heights, and Beverly Hills, and all these amazing developments that some refer to as the apex of American planning, none of these really have a five-minute walk pedestrian shed at their core. They have concentrated retail areas and huge areas of residential land. And I think one of the great achievements of New Urbanism is to take the other tremendous intelligence from those plans, the other great techniques that are present in those plans, and combine them with the neighborhood unit, which actually is missing in most of them.

The Lubber Run Farmers Market is a five-minute walk from the property and is open every Saturday from April through November. The Ballston Farmers Market is located less than two miles from our community and is open the first Thursday of each month.

We have a dog park located on our property where you can let your furry friend run free. There are also several larger dog parks within a 10-minute drive of our community. Or you can take advantage of the Lubber Run Trail, one mile of paved streamside trail through the woods and located just a five-minute walk from our community.

The Five-Minute Linguist is a high-profile event which features eight LSA members giving lively and engaging presentations about their research in a manner accessible to the general public. No notes, no podium, and an actual timer. These five-minute presentations are judged by a panel of journalists as well as the audience itself, and a winner is chosen at the end of the event. The goal of this event is to encourage LSA members to practice presenting their work to a broad audience and to showcase outstanding examples of members who can explain their research in an accessible way. The 2023 LSA Annual Meeting Program is now available here.
